Bluebirds prefer an open location habitat. They rarely nest in woodlands. Locate your box within 50-feet of a tree, tall shrub or solitary perch. Mom and Dad Bluebird love the height to inspect the area and scan for predators. Mount your Bluebird house on a 1/2" pole and ensure that your house is at least 5' from the ground. Never install your house on a fence or tree.
Mealworms! Yes, you heard me. Bluebirds LOVE mealworms! Mealworms are high in protein and Bluebirds enjoy eating them year-round. Bluebirds prefer live, juicy ones as nature intended, but will also enjoy dried ones. Another Bluebird favorite is peanut nuggets which can be found at your local bird feed store. Always offer Bluebird feed in a separate feeder from other birds. A small flat dish with drainage or a screen bottom works best ~ avoid wet, rotted food.
Female Bluebirds start building a nest in the first part of April. It usually takes 3-4 days for nest building. Nests are neat, deep, cupped-shaped and made of pine needles. One egg is laid per day, 4-5 eggs are typical. Once all eggs are laid, the female broods the eggs for 12-14 days. The Bluebird babies will hatch and spend the next 18-21 days developing and getting ready to fledge! The male will take over while the female seeks to build a second nest, begin egg laying, brooding and fledging again! A third nest may occur if there is adequate food and time.
